GDPR & WEEE COMPLIANT, INSURED & LICENSED

Data Centre Decommissioning Services

We de-rack, wipe and remove entire server rooms, data halls and colocation cages for UK organisations — from site survey and rack-level asset tagging to certified drive destruction, residual-value recovery and WEEE recycling, all on a serialised chain of custody with no offshore brokering.

What is data centre decommissioning?

The secure retirement of a data centre or server room — de-racking and removing hardware, destroying or sanitising every data-bearing drive, and responsibly reusing or recycling the remainder. TFix handles single cages, whole data halls, and multi-site shutdown programmes end to end.

What Enterprise Teams Get

One team, the whole shutdown

Decommissioning is more than pulling drives — it is the documented, compliant retirement of an entire estate.

De-racking & removal

Rack-by-rack and cage-by-cage de-racking, asset tagging and tamper-evident packing for licensed transport.

Certified drive destruction

NIST 800-88 Rev.2 erasure with tScrub or BS EN 15713 shredding, each drive serialised and certified.

Value recovery & recycling

De-branded reuse or resale of viable servers to offset cost, and WEEE recycling of the remainder — zero landfill.

How a shutdown runs

1

Survey & plan

Site walkthrough, asset register, access windows and a staged decommissioning plan.

2

De-rack & tag

Power down, de-cable, asset-tag and tamper-evident pack every unit for transport.

3

Destroy & certify

Erase or shred every drive to standard, with serialised certificates and 5% forensic sampling.

4

Recover & recycle

De-branded resale or reuse offsets cost; the rest is WEEE-recycled with full reporting.

What we decommission

The full data-centre estate, handled as one accountable scope.

Servers & blades

Rack, blade and tower servers, de-racked and serialised before drive destruction.

SAN / NAS storage arrays

Storage arrays and shelves, with drives erased or shredded to standard.

Network switches & firewalls

Switches, routers, firewalls and load balancers, de-cabled and asset-tagged.

PDUs & UPS systems

Power distribution and battery backup units, handled under ADR where required.

Racks, cages & containment

Cabinets, cages and hot/cold-aisle containment, dismantled and recycled.

Cabling & optical media

Copper, fibre and optical media, recycled under WEEE with full reporting.

Evidence for every rack retired

A data centre shutdown lives or dies on documentation. You receive a complete audit pack for every cage or hall we decommission.

  • Serialised Certificates of Destruction for every data-bearing drive
  • Waste Transfer Notes and chain-of-custody IDs per collection
  • Residual-value report with recovered amount offset against cost
  • WEEE recycling and ESG reporting for the remainder

Data centre decommissioning FAQ

What does data centre decommissioning include?

Site survey and planning, safe de-racking and removal, certified data destruction or sanitisation of every drive, serialised chain of custody, and WEEE-compliant recycling or reuse of the remaining hardware.

Can you decommission a live data centre without disrupting operations?

Yes. Work is planned around approved change windows and site SOPs, with rack-by-rack or cage-by-cage staging so live systems stay up while end-of-life equipment is removed.

How are drives handled during a data centre shutdown?

Data-bearing media is erased to NIST SP 800-88 Rev.2 with tScrub software or physically destroyed to BS EN 15713, each with a serialised certificate and 5% forensic sampling verification.

What happens to the servers and racks after decommissioning?

After certified data destruction, viable servers and components are de-branded for reuse or resale to offset cost, and everything else is recycled under WEEE compliance — nothing goes to landfill or untracked brokers.

How much does data centre decommissioning cost?

Pricing depends on rack count, media type, site access and out-of-hours requirements. After a site survey we provide a fixed quote, with the recovered residual value shown as a separate offset — you only pay the net.

How is data centre decommissioning different from IT decommissioning?

IT decommissioning covers offices and server rooms broadly. Data centre decommissioning is the larger-scale, cage-by-cage or hall-by-hall retirement of a whole data centre or colocation estate, with heavier chain-of-custody, serialised drive destruction and value-recovery reporting.
