What happens to old hi-fi equipment?

Working audio equipment is tested, PAT-checked, cleaned and repaired, then resold into the second-hand market. Non-repairable units are recycled. This stream is non-hazardous — no batteries and no data-bearing devices.

What You Get

Every Asset Logged. Every Step Documented.

The same verified foundations on every project — documented, traceable, and UK-only.

1. Tested & PAT-checked

Every unit is power-tested and Portable Appliance Tested so buyers receive working, electrically-safe equipment.

2. Repair before resale

Minor faults are fixed and units cleaned before they go back into the second-hand market.

3. Reuse over recycling

Working audio is resold, not shredded — only non-repairable units are recycled to WEEE standards.

UK chain of custody. No offshore brokering.

Every asset is logged by serial number, transported under chain of custody by our Environment Agency registered carrier, and processed at our licensed UK facility in Mitcham — never sold on to an untracked offshore broker.

Certifications & Compliance

Compliance You Can Verify

Certification vs alignment: the table lists the registrations and certifications TFix holds and can evidence. References to ISO 27001 elsewhere on this site describe alignment with its information-security principles, not certification.

Standards we work to

  • NIST SP 800-88 Rev.2— Media sanitisation standard governing secure erase and physical destruction.
  • NCSC Secure Sanitisation Guidance— Current UK government guidance on secure sanitisation and disposal of storage media (replaces the withdrawn HMG IA Standard 5).
  • UK GDPR & Data Protection Act 2018— Legal basis for evidenced, auditable destruction of personal data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about audio & hi-fi disposal.

Do you test audio equipment before selling it?

Yes. Every unit is tested, PAT-checked and cleaned before resale, so buyers get working, electrically-safe equipment.

Where is refurbished hi-fi sold?

Working audio equipment is resold through our GearHaven storefront into the second-hand market.

Why only mains-powered equipment?

This stream is non-hazardous — it contains no batteries and no data-bearing devices. Battery or wireless gear needs hazardous handling and has no reuse value here.
