When business technology is collected for reuse or recycling, attention often focuses on laptops, desktops and other higher-value equipment. However, the accessories gathered alongside them also need a clear and responsible route. Keyboards and mice may have little or no resale value for us, but they still contain materials that should not be placed in general waste.

Why keyboards and mice need a recycling route

Once an item is damaged, incomplete, heavily worn or unsuitable for reuse, it needs to be handled as electrical and electronic equipment rather than ordinary rubbish.

Recycling these accessories involves breaking them down into their main material streams. The plastic casing can be separated from the internal electronics, while cables and circuit boards can be processed through appropriate recycling channels. This helps ensure that useful materials are recovered where possible and that electronic components are not sent to landfill.

Responsible ITAD is not only about recovering valuable devices. It also involves making sensible decisions about low-value equipment, documenting the process and ensuring that waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is handled through suitable channels.
