Being a specialist game console repair centre we deal with Playstation 4 systems on a daily basis. One of the major issues when it comes to PS4 is APU BGA failure, which most of the time occurs due to overheating. APU is Accelerated Processing Unit responsible for crunching CPU and GPU related tasks. It is attached to circuit board using hundreds of tiny (0.5mm in diameter to be precise) solder spheres. These solder balls are prone to developing micro cracks within them as a result of multiple expansion and retraction cycles caused by APU heating and cooling.
The only way to properly repair this kind of issue is to replace these solder spheres. The process of refurbishing BGA is called Playstation 4 APU reballing. It is essentially removing the component using specialised SMD rework station, cleaning all the original solder, placing new solder spheres on APU BGA and reflowing it back onto motherboard.
The process is actually quite complicated and you can read more about it here. This project involved carrying out PS4 APU reballing procedure, which once finished brought the game console back to life at a fraction of the cost of new unit. As usual, whilst performing any repair on PS4, we thoroughly cleaned all internal components and ran various stress tests to ensure it will run just fine once it is returned back to customer.
